3

Your Excellency:

4

While in Poughkeepsie last week, I heard about your new house, which as I understand is now under construction in Hyde Park. Undoubtedly, you are planning to have a fine lawn, trees, and flower beds.

5

As you know a good lawn, trees, etc., require the proper plant food. As an employee of Swift and Co., I am equipped to make a complete test of your soil and thus be able to know which is the proper plant food. Incidentally, the soil test is a free service.

6

My suggestion is that you accept this service that I might make plant food suggestions at the time you plan to seed your lawn. You may be interested to know that should we get the order for plant food at some later date, that order would be turned over to your local dealer in Hyde Park or Poughkeepsie.

7

If you are agreeable to having this soil test made, please let me know at your earliest convenience. I am in Dutchess County at least two days every week.

8

An early reply will be appreciated.

Very truly yours,

My dear Mr. Cartwright:

12

I have received your letter of October eighth and want you to know that I more than appreciate your courtesy in writing to me. However, I am having no lawn and keeping the woods in their natural state.

13

Thank you very much for your kind offer of service.

14

Very sincerely yours,
FDR
