By Arthur Smith,
Executive Secretary The National Patients' Committee.

5

The Georgia Warm Springs Foundation is conducted without profit and the rates to patients barely represent the direct cost. Even so, the after-treatment of Polio is expensive to the individual and family, precisely because it must always be reckoned in long periods of time.

6

What is to be done for those who cannot pay their own way at cost? The Foundation has no endowment nor does it expect to acquire one in the next several years. But Polio (Infantile Paralysis), that devastating disease affecting children, young people, grown ups and crippling them for life unless they get proper care, does not await better times. 1931 saw it strike down more victims than in any year since the great epidemic of 1916. The demands on the Foundation will be great for years to come if no new cases are added to the roster which is too much to hope.

7

What then is the answer for the under-privileged who need what Warm Springs has to offer? A Patients' Aid Fund, of course, and be it said that the Foundation with all its struggles to acquire donations for purchase of property, construction, etc., has not failed to start such a fund! But it is pitifully inadequate, now.

8

Here is where the National Patients' Committee sponsoring "The Polio Crusaders" comes into the picture. While the Foundation trustees fight their battles along other fronts, we, a voluntary and unpaid organization of present and past patients, invite you to help us underwrite this vital part of a great humanitarian work.

9

We do not ask for principal, but only for a tiny fraction of your income. We prefer that you give only as much as you hope to renew next year and the year after that.

10

A large number of annual subscribers who are interested and participating is a more constructive force than an endowment in a work like this which is so current and so personal. So go hang your old depression!

11

Fill in the application and let us mail the Crusader button and membership certificate pictured here. The first dollar of each donation is used for the general work of the Committee which includes sending you the Polio Chronicle during your membership. Every cent over the amount goes directly to the Patients' Aid Fund to help a worthy and stricken human being renew his faith in mankind.
