Dear Tom.:-

4

"The Chronicle" a free and widely distributed publication gotten out by the Luzerne County Republican organization at a time when our county seat, due to a strike, is without newspapers to combat its influence, carried the enclosed editorial under the caption; "Oil Burner To Be Installed By Franklin Roosevelt". The sinister purpose, of course, was to prove Our President was not in sympathy with the interests of the anthracite miners, numbering 100,000, in the hard coal field of Pennsylvania.

5

On Sunday, October 23rd, the Scrantonian, a weekly issued at Scranton and widely distributed through the Lackawanna region, carried the enclosed cartoon and gave it even wider circulation for the same purpose.

6

I have a plan to propose which will not only meet this criticism, but present an opportunity to turn the political thrust into a boomerang. The plan is this:- I will gladly and without cost, or upon the nominal payment of one dollar, in the event the president feels adverse to gift acceptance, install a modern Vulcan Anthracite Stoker in his new summer home with a guarantee the equipment will prove cheaper in operation, more satisfactory and efficient in service than any oil or other heating unit on the market. With thermostatic control, bin-to-boiler feed and ash removal devices, Vulcan Anthracite Stoker eliminates cares and worries, and meets every claim for convenience made by competitive fuels.

7

In addition to the beneficial effects of an early acceptance of this offer upon the coming effort to keep Pennsylvania Liberal With Roosevelt, I would add it also embodies a strong, personal desire to repay our Greatest President for assistance granted through enactment of his FHA. This legislation saved the Vulcan Stoker Company and many others from bankruptcy, and I feel obligated to, in some small way, display our gratitude.

8

Your earliest attention and presentment of the matter will, I am sure, prove mutually advantageous. Best of luck and well wishes,

9

Cordially yours,
Vulcan Anthracite Stoker Co
James A. Casey, Pres.
